Charlies Produce Spokane and Good Food Store make donation of 3,800 pounds of apples

Montana Food Bank Network receives donation of 3,800 pounds of fresh apples. Charlies Produce Spokane and Good Food Store made a donation of over 3,800 pounds of apples to the Montana Food Bank Network to help feed those struggling with food insecurity across the state.

This donation signals the participation of Charlie’s Produce in the Take a Bite Out of Hunger™ Program sponsored by FirstFruits Marketing.

FirstFruits Marketing of Washington created The Take a Bite out of Hunger campaign to help feed the underserved while bringing attention to the problem of food insecurity in the United States and Canada. This is Charlie’s Produce fifth year participating in the campaign.

“We’re proud to give back to our community and participating in Take a Bite Out of Hunger is a great way to make a difference,” said Alex Plummer, General Manager of Charlie’s Produce Spokane.  “This donation of more than 3,800 pounds of apples ensures that the shelves at our local food bank are stocked with fresh produce.”

This is the ninth year that the company has held its annual Take a Bite Out of Hunger program, which seeks to feed the underserved and call attention to food insecurity in the country. Data from the USDA shows that 11.8% of all U.S. households are considered food-insecure. Furthermore, 1 out of 6 households with children reported food insecurity at a higher rate than those without children according to their website.

“We love working with wholesalers like Charlie’s Produce who are committed to serving their local communities,” said Joe Vargas, regional marketing manager of FirstFruits Marketing.  “Together, we’re not only making a donation, but we’re making a difference while raising awareness of food insecurity in the United States and Canada.”

Over approximately 2 million pounds of fresh apples have been donated to local food banks since the program’s inception in 2010.  Last year alone, over 250,000 pounds of fresh apples were donated in participating retailers’ names to local food banks in their communities.
